DoorDash Unveils Its Own Delivery Drone and AI Text Ordering, but Flights Have No Start Date

    Key Takeaways

    • DoorDash unveiled its in-house delivery drone, DoorDash Air, on September 30, 2026, with Chipotle, Popeyes and Momo N Curry among the first restaurant partners for pilots in Northern California.
    • DoorDash gave no launch date, city, payload weight, range or speed for DoorDash drone delivery.
    • All of DoorDash's lifetime autonomous deliveries add up to less than a tenth of one average day of its orders, its own disclosures show.

DoorDash drone delivery now has an aircraft and its first restaurant partners, but no start date. On September 30, 2026, the company unveiled the drone behind DoorDash Air, its in-house air delivery program, and said pilot deliveries will begin in Northern California. Chipotle, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Momo N Curry are among the first restaurants to sign on. The same day, DoorDash opened a US waitlist for a feature that lets customers order by text message.

The aircraft flies on six slow-spinning propellers and lowers orders on a winch. DoorDash says its cruising noise at delivery height is roughly that of a passing car. The company says about 80% of today's typical DoorDash restaurant orders are light and small enough for it to carry, and that initial tests showed delivery from restaurant to door in under five minutes on average. Both figures are DoorDash's own estimates and carry footnotes in the announcement.

"We didn't start with a drone and ask what would fit. We started with what people order and how local businesses actually operate, then built the entire system from there," said Harrison Shih, the head of DoorDash Air, in the announcement. TechCrunch reported that DoorDash built the loading, handoff and packaging systems before the aircraft, and sized the system around its historical order data.

    What the records show

Three things are missing from the announcement, and DoorDash's own filings supply a fourth point of scale.

    • No launch date or city. The announcement says only that pilots "will begin in Northern California". It names no date and no city.
    • No payload, range or speed. DoorDash published no weight limit, flight range, cruise speed or decibel figure, DroneXL noted. By comparison, the same outlet reported that Wing's drones flying Lowe's orders in North Carolina have a published limit of about 2.5 pounds per flight.
    • Sixty-three days from certificate to unveiling. DoorDash announced on July 29, 2026 that it had earned Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, and said it was the eighth drone operator to do so. The aircraft was shown 63 days later. A certificate is not the last approval. An operator still needs airspace authorization and may need waivers for flights beyond visual line of sight, Fox News reported.
    • The scale gap. DoorDash says it has completed "hundreds of thousands" of autonomous deliveries in its lifetime, across its Dot sidewalk robot and its robot and drone partners. Its second-quarter 2026 results report 970 million Total Orders in the quarter, up 27% from a year earlier. That is about 10.7 million orders a day. Even if lifetime autonomous deliveries were just under a million, they would equal less than a tenth of one average day.

DoorDash text ordering opens a waitlist

The second announcement is further along. DoorDash's AI ordering agent runs inside Apple's Messages app and is live with 20,000 users in a US pilot on iOS, Implicator reported. A waitlist for other US customers opened on September 30 at doordash.com/text.

"You can now just text DoorDash and let it order for you," co-founder Andy Fang wrote on X. The agent matches a phone number to a DoorDash account, uses order history and stored payment details, and completes checkout inside the text thread. It can reorder a usual order or be added to a group text to collect everyone's order.

    Why it matters

DoorDash reported $4.5 billion in revenue and $33.1 billion in Marketplace gross order value for the second quarter. At that size, a drone that can carry 80% of restaurant orders is a claim about where delivery costs go over years, and nothing in this announcement changes how food arrives this quarter. The numbers to wait for are the ones DoorDash left out: payload, range, the first city and the first date.

For food access, the DoorDash program that already reaches people in need is on the ground. Project DASH has powered an estimated 150 million meal deliveries for food banks and community partners, as we reported when DoorDash launched its Food as Medicine grants. DoorDash has not said whether drones will serve that program. Its earlier bet on autonomy was also on wheels, an investment in the Rivian spinoff ALSO.

    People Also Ask

DoorDash has not given a date. It said on September 30, 2026 that DoorDash Air pilot deliveries will begin in Northern California, with Chipotle, Popeyes and Momo N Curry among the first partners.

How much can the DoorDash Air drone carry?

DoorDash has not published a payload weight for DoorDash Air. It says about 80% of typical DoorDash restaurant orders are light and small enough for the drone.

Is DoorDash approved by the FAA to fly drones?

DoorDash announced on July 29, 2026 that it earned FAA Part 135 air carrier certification, the eighth drone operator to do so. Operators still need airspace authorization before flying.

How does DoorDash text ordering work?

DoorDash text ordering is an AI agent in Apple's Messages app that places orders from a text, using the customer's order history and saved payment details. It is in a US pilot with 20,000 users, with a waitlist at doordash.com/text.
