Ex-Genentech AI Scientists Launch Ortet With a $500 Million Health Bet

    Key Takeaways

    • Ortet launched as a frontier AI lab for health with a $500 million commitment from the investment firm Thoreau.

    • The company was founded by Kyunghyun Cho and a group of former Genentech and Roche AI researchers.

    • Ortet is building a patient-centered AI foundation model spanning biological, clinical, operational, and financial health data.

A group of former Genentech AI scientists launched a new company, Ortet, on Monday with a $500 million commitment from the investment firm Thoreau, according to Endpoints News and the company's announcement.

Ortet is building what it calls a patient-centered AI foundation model, one system trained across the biological, clinical, operational, and financial sides of health so that progress in one area strengthens the others. Most health data today sits in separate systems that do not talk to each other. The $500 million, from a firm led by Matt Holt, backs computing and data infrastructure, model training, and hiring.

The founding team is deeply credentialed. Chief executive Kyunghyun Cho helped develop the attention mechanism that underpins modern AI models and built Genentech's frontier research group. He is joined by co-founders who developed AI systems at Spotify, ByteDance, and Genentech and who ran Genentech's largest computing cluster. Jeff Hammerbacher, who built Facebook's early data team and served as Cloudera's chief scientist, is chairman.

Cho said patient care should improve with every interaction, but that health data and infrastructure "remain too fragmented for that learning to happen at scale." None of this is new. What's new is the scale of money and talent now pointed at using AI to read biology, the same direction as Anthropic's claim that Claude agents found a new CRISPR-like enzyme system and the AI drug-repurposing work that helped save a dying patient. Worth watching whether a foundation model can do for medicine what it did for language.

    What is Ortet?

Ortet is a frontier AI lab for health, launched in 2026, building a patient-centered AI foundation model across biological, clinical, operational, and financial data.

    Who founded Ortet?

Kyunghyun Cho, a pioneer of the attention mechanism, founded it along with former Genentech and Roche AI researchers.

How much funding did Ortet raise?

Ortet launched with a $500 million commitment from the investment firm Thoreau, led by Matt Holt.

    What will Ortet build?

A single AI foundation model designed to connect health data that is usually siloed, so learning in one domain improves the others.
